Australia might be riding on the coal miner's back but it seems many Australians are paying a terrible price for the mineral export boom. Reporter Andrew Fowler documents how the people in a once picturesque part of the Hunter Valley found themselves surrounded by coalmines, dust and toxic chemicals. Program features Wendy Bowman, among others. As well as the 'regular' Four Corners website (where you can read a transcript of the show) there is also a special extended website where you can watch the program in full, see extended interviews and read various correspondence, including the NSW Health Minister's response to the program. |
- 'The Good Earth' (July, 2009)

Reporter Sarah Ferguson visits the front line as farmers confront two mining giants with a blockade that's intended to keep coal exploration teams off their property. The mining companies say that coal mines can co-exist with intensive agriculture but farmers reject this view warning they will not give up their land. Features Tim Duddy and other members of the Caroona Coal Action Group. On the Four Corners website you can view the program in full (broadband | dialup), read the full transcript and examine other materials, such as (then) Minister Ian McDonald's statement regarding the program. |
